Identifying and Managing Emergence in Projects

A number of aspects of emergence have occurred through the integration of multiple independent systems. These include the global financial crisis and swine flu. Other aspects of emergence include a turbulent business environment, changes in the state of an entity (the international business world has changed with the introduction of the internet), emergence of entrepreneurial opportunities, emergence of unsafe states in complicated machinery and finally emergence associated with system of systems, that is, the integration of multiple independent systems.

Managing system of systems will receive more attention than the other aspects of emergence, including identification of requirements, creation of a project architecture, managing progressive commitment and different ways of managing staff.

Professor Ireland, Director of Project Management & Industry Programs ( http://www.adelaide.edu.au/directory/vernon.ireland) is a main speaker at the IPMA conference in Helsinki on 15-17 June on this topic.
