Singapore’s wholly-developed authoring software, KooBits Author, allows both schoolchildren and adults to become potential Stephen Kings or JK Rowlings.
This interactive eBook publishing application from Personal e-Motion Pte Ltd allows users to produce their own online works, complete with graphics, voice, video and animation (see example above).
Pupils in 70 primary schools and a number of secondary schools are now using the application to create digital books quickly and conveniently, says general manager Stanley Han.
“We want to mould a generation of e-publishing adopters. Our software offers students the publishing tools, as easy as child’s play, that have similar features and functions as good as those of high-end, expensive authoring applications,” he says. “We want to bring e-publishing to the classroom with contents that are alive.”
Founded in 2003 as an IT spin-off from the National University of Singapore, the company has so far invested more than half-a-million dollars, says Mr Han. By year-end, he plans to launch another new product, called iKooBits, although he doesn’t want to reveal more details.
Personal e-Motion also organises workshops, and supports competitions for schools to promote online publishing.
Mr Han says KooBits, which can be adapted to local languages, is also used in schools in the region, including Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Maldives and China.
