Tyler Projects has developed Singapore’s first and most popular Facebook Multiplayer online game, Battle Stations, attracting more than 200,000 users, says founder Leonard Lin. The game also appears on Friendster a d other social networking sites.
“We are also adding new features such as a venture mode that allows the user to play through a storyline,” he says. His company earns money from the sale of virtual items for Battle Stations.
Following this success, Mr Lin, 27, says he is developing Five Kingdoms, which will be available on Facebook by the end of October.
When Mr Lin started his business, he had no idea it would turn out to be a solid winner. On the surface, it looked sensible - creating Web-based applications for social networking sites such as Facebook.
He decided to test his business plan by entering it in the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan competition two years ago. He impressed the judges enough to scoop third prize, but more importantly, he learnt about financial management, planning, forecasting and all the other details that go into running a successful business. He is now a managing partner in his own start-up, Tyler Projects (with two other business partners), which specialises in Web illustration and design, photography, mobile solutions and game and software development.
Tyler Projects also helps companies that want to leverage social networks do so by developing applications, tailored to corporate needs. Entertainment value comes from player-to-player interactions and player generated content rather than content from the developer. Game applications are available on different social networks but users can access any of their game accounts by logging in through Tylers' portal, without the need to log in to the social Web site.
