Being focused the key to Autoscan's continuous profits

Nov 15, 2007: Staying focused is the secret of 15 years of uninterrupted profits for Autoscan Technology, despite the Asian financial meltdown of 1997 and the SARS crisis of 2002-03.

Autoscan sticks to what it is good at: the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in supply chain management.

Chief executive Patrick Chua says: “We found our niche by providing value-added IT services and equipment to industries in manufacturing, transportation and logistics, maintenance and aviation.”

The company, which started operation in barcode system consultation and implementation, claims its core competence is in the re-design of business processes using AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) technologies and in providing logistics solutions.

It operates in four “must win” markets -- Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and China. “We are not a global brand,” says Patrick. “We have yet to establish a significant presence in the region and globally.” But Autoscan is working on establishing its brand and setting up channel partners.

“Singapore, China, Malaysia and Thailand are strategic markets. With the right partners and good products, we expect these countries to become significant revenue contributors from 2008 to 2011.”

From sales of about $1 million in 1992, its first year of business, Autoscan has grown to a $12 million-plus company. Singapore accounts for 80 per cent of sales, but Patrick expects a bigger percentage from abroad as business picks up in the other markets.
