Driving Singapore's transformation

January 2009: Singapore tomorrow will be a global city driven by technology that gives every individual and endeavour the freedom to connect, innovate and create.

The vision is for Singapore to be an intelligent nation and a global city powered by infocomm, according to RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore. He was sharing his thoughts on driving Singapore’s transformation through infocomm, in the Infocomm Newsletter, January 2009.

The Intelligent Nation 2015 (iN2015), a 10-year master plan, aims to help realise the potential of infocomm over the next decade. Led by IDA, iN2015 is the result of collaboration and contribution from the private and public sectors, and individuals from all walks of life.

One of the key strategies of the plan is the transformation of key economic sectors, government and society through more sophisticated and innovative use of infocomm. And the impact of infocomm will intensify, especially in inter-disciplinary applications aimed at addressing issues across diverse areas such as healthcare, genomics, pharmaceuticals, security and energy.

Infocomm will enhance economic competitiveness and innovation, fostering a conducive environment to encourage the creation of new industries, innovative services and knowledge capital.

In Singapore, revenue growth of the infocomm industry has been on a strong up-trend since 2003, rising at an annual growth rate in excess of 12 per cent. While the current economic crisis may slow down the rate of growth, we remain optimistic about the long-term outlook for the infocomm sector.

Businesses can be expected to be more cautious with their spending and investment given the economic uncertainties ahead. Nonetheless, for the infocomm industry, there are still growth opportunities as businesses seek to better manage costs through more innovative use of infocomm technology, says RADM(NS) Tay.
